چکیده
‡ College of Engineering, California State University, Long Beach _____________________________________________________________________ In this paper we propose an intelligent transportation system for container movement between inland port and terminals, in which fully automated trucks are employed to transfer all the containers. The inland port is located a few miles away from the terminals and is used for storing and processing import/export containers before distribution to customers or transfer to the terminals. We design and analyze such an intelligent transportation system, with particular attention to the overall supervisory controller that synchronizes all the operations inside the automated system. We employ the technique of truck platooning in order to simplify the control of the overall system, and minimize the possibility of deadlocks, congestion and failures. A microscopic simulation model is developed and used to demonstrate the overall performance of the proposed system.

Yard crane is an important resource in container terminals. Efficient utilization of the yard crane significantly improves the productivity and the profitability of the container terminal. This paper presents a mixed integer programming model for the yard crane scheduling problem with non- interference constraint that is NPHARD in nature. In other words, one of the most important constraints in...

متن کاملSimulation Modeling and Analysis of Complex Port Operations with Multimodal Transportation
World trade has been increasing dramatically in the past two decades, and as a result containers exchange has grown significantly. Accordingly, container terminals are expanding to meet this increase and new container ports have opened. Ports with one or more container terminals are considered complex systems in which many resources, entities and transporters interact to achieve the objective o...
متن کاملJob Creation Factors for Inland and Near Dock Intermodal Facilities
The major driving forces behind the establishment of intermodal facilities include number of jobs that will be created by the facility, freight performance improvement, and other economic benefits to the region. Job creation is the most tangible benefit that stakeholders use to justify the development of such facilities. This project explores different job creation factors for intermodal facili...
متن کاملIncorporating Maritime Stakeholder Perspectives for Implementing an 'Inland-Depots-for-Empty-Containers' System Using an Analytic Hierarchy Process
Container movement involves several stakeholders where each group is focused on achieving its own objectives. By actively considering the perspective of different maritime stakeholders, this paper identifies a set of implementation strategies and prioritizes them to successfully implement an ‘Inland-Depots-for-Empty-Containers’ (IDEC) system in a region. It builds on the authors’ earlier work t...
